Officers in tin buttons kept an eye on vagrants, hooligans, and those committing adultery in an indecent manner. What was the difference between a mild death sentence and an aggravated one, and who were subject to the pillory, the whipping post, curfews, or branding with a hot iron? 

The police fought crime with dedication, even though they were not allowed to carry an umbrella, keep their hands in their pockets, or engage in conversation with bystanders except in official matters or when asked for advice.
